Data is a social object, Ton Zijlstra, 23. September 2011

In my presentations over the past 8 months I’ve positioned data as an object of sociality: it becomes the trigger for interaction, a trigger for the forming of connections between people. Much like photos are the social object of a site like Flickr.com, and videos are the social object of YouTube, or your daily activities are for Twitter.

Why some social network services work and others don’t – Or: the case for object-centered sociality, Jyri Engeström, 13. April 2005

Russell’s disappointment in LinkedIn implies that the term ‘social networking’ makes little sense if we leave out the objects that mediate the ties between people.

«Soziale Objekte» im Marketing 2.0, Martin Lindner, 21. Dezember 2009

Social objects are the future of marketing, Hugh Macleod, Mai 2007

The Social Object, in a nutshell, is the reason two people are talking to each other, as opposed to talking to somebody else. Human beings are social animals. We like to socialize. But if think about it, there needs to be a reason for it to happen in the first place. That reason, that «node» in the social network, is what we call the Social Object.

Musing about social objects: Mollucs that matter, JP Rangaswami, 16. Februar 2008

You can have a conversation without a social object. You cannot have a social object without a conversation. It is the conversation that makes the object «social». Conversations grow around social objects, much like pearls grow around microscopic dust. Social objects are about growth, they are «live». If you try and «inject» a social object into a conversation, then what you get, at best, is a cultured pearl. That’s what mass media did. Mass media tried to farm conversations. And created cultured pearls. Social objects are natural, not artificial.
